Water Filtration Media Overview

Water filtration media is crucial to any filtration system. The specific types of toxins present in the source water can help determine which filtration component will be most effective. FupengWater offers a wide variety of filtration media, including sand, anthracite, garnet, activated carbon, magnesium oxide, and more. These media include mixed media, water softening resins, reverse osmosis membranes, ultraviolet light, activated carbon, KDF (kinetic degradation flux), and chlorine removal media.

Single-media filters typically consist of a single medium, most often crushed anthracite, coal, or sand. While these filters were previously more common, technological advancements have significantly improved the efficiency of dual-media and multi-media filters. Consequently, nearly all filters used in advanced wastewater treatment applications are of the dual-media or multi-media type.

Compared to single-media filtration systems, multi-media filtration systems offer significantly higher water purification efficiency, primarily due to their ability to purify water at higher flow rates. Furthermore, through innovative selection and use of filtration media, these systems can enhance filter bed performance. Multi-media filtration also delivers high-quality filtered water at a faster flow rate than traditional sand filtration.

In traditional sand filters, lighter, finer sand particles reside at the top of the filter bed, while coarser, heavier sand particles remain at the bottom after backwashing. Filtration primarily occurs in the top few inches of the filter bed.

Multi-media filters backwash in the same manner as sand filters, using water flowing in the opposite direction, or upward, through the filter bed. Due to the varying densities of each media, the layers maintain their stratified state.

Filter Media Types

FupengWater offers a wide range of high-quality filter media that meet industry standards for high-efficiency filtration.

  • Sand: FupengWater's sand comes in various grades, suitable for use as filter media or underlayment, depending on particle size and intended use.

  • Anthracite: Anthracite is recommended as a filter media when silica addition is not required; it removes lighter turbidity.

  • Calcite: Calcite media is a specially graded calcium carbonate compound designed to neutralize acids and has a stable dissolution rate, making it suitable for water treatment applications. - Activated Carbon: Activated carbon media is used for removing taste, odor, and chlorine and is used in many drinking water applications.

  • Manganese Greensand: Manganese greensand media is a treated siliceous material used to treat water containing iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide.

  • ProSand: ProSand is made from a rare, naturally occurring mineral whose unique properties radically improve media filtration performance and reduce costs.
