RO stands for "Reverse Osmosis Membrane."
Normally, water flows from low concentration to high concentration. However, when pressure is applied to water, it flows from high concentration to low concentration. This is known as reverse osmosis. Because the pore size of the RO membrane is only 0.0001 microns (0.5 millionths of a human hair), it is invisible to the naked eye. Bacteria and viruses are 5,000 times larger. Therefore, only water molecules and some beneficial mineral ions can pass through the RO membrane, while other impurities and heavy metals are discharged through the wastewater pipe. This method is used in seawater desalination processes and astronaut wastewater recycling.
